Helping youth explore safe alternatives to shelter.
YSB’s Youth Shelter Diversion program provides immediate, youth-centred support to people aged 16 to 24 experiencing housing instability. The program is designed to help young people avoid entering the shelter system by first exploring safe, alternative solutions tailored to their unique situations.
Diversion is not about saying no to shelter. It’s about exploring every possible option before having to access emergency shelter. If shelter is ultimately the best option, our team will ensure a smooth transition into intake and support.
Through compassionate, one-on-one conversations, our staff work collaboratively with youth to understand their needs, identify strengths, and develop personalized plans. This may involve mediating family relationships, connecting with extended support networks, securing temporary housing options, or accessing other community resources.
Together with the youth, we participate in goal-setting and planning, which provides them with the ability to meet their immediate basic needs while working to pursue long-term stability and independence.
Our Diversion Program is committed to providing a safe, inclusive, and non-judgmental environment that respects diverse backgrounds, identities, and lived experiences of all youth, including LGBTQ2S+ youth.
