Volunteer Recruitment Posting – Director, YSB Foundation Board

The Youth Services Bureau Charitable Foundation (YSB Foundation) is recruiting for qualified candidates to join its Board of Directors. We are particularly seeking candidates with strong connections within the corporate world and in the community.

While the YSB Foundation was established more than 15 years ago, YSB has been operating since in 1960 and today is one of the largest, most comprehensive non-profit agencies serving youth in Ottawa. More than 425 caring professionals work from 22 locations throughout Ottawa to deliver programs and services in both English and French that support vulnerable youth and their families in the areas of mental health, shelters and housing, employment and justice support.

Board members will join a dynamic, compassionate and highly committed team of business and community leaders drawn from all sectors, all of whom believe youth deserve support and opportunity regardless of the barriers or challenges they face. As a Board director, you will deepen your interest and understanding of the issues faced by vulnerable youth in Ottawa. You will have the opportunity to participate in Foundation planning, signature and community third-party events supporting YSB, as well as a variety of fundraising and marketing campaigns. You will also connect with the YSB Board of Directors who help guide the organization as it relates to programs and services. Most importantly, you will realize the direct impact your work and contributions make on vulnerable youth and their families.

The Board’s focus is on fundraising and raising YSB’s profile in the community. The ideal candidates will have the time to offer meaningful contributions, and the skill-set, expertise and experience necessary to guide the Foundation to continued success.

YSB’s Mission: As a service provider, advocate, and community partner, YSB works with youth in both English and French to end homelessness, reimagine mental health, expand opportunity through education and employment, advance restorative justice, and amplify youth voices, so every young person and their family can thrive.

Board Member Role: The Board’s role is to ensure that the Foundation establishes strategic fundraising priorities aligned to YSB’s work, and maintains the trust of the community by being clear in its mission, prudent and ethical in its activities, and accountable for its actions. Board Members are individual role models and inspire others to contribute their talent and support to the community.

Remuneration:  Service on the YSB Foundation Board is voluntary (no remuneration)

Term: Board members elected by the Membership for (renewable) 2-year terms

Responsibilities:

  • Committed to the mission and work of the Youth Services Bureau
  • Prepares for and participates in bi-monthly board meetings, Annual General Meeting and other meetings as required
  • Assists in identifying and cultivating prospective donors, works with the Foundation ED to determine appropriate solicitation and stewardship strategies
  • Fosters a positive working relationship with other Board members and the YSB Foundation’s Executive Director
  • Promotes the organization in the community
  • Actively participates in fundraising activities, as well as evaluation and planning efforts
  • Participates in various activities and campaigns in support of YSB as needed throughout the year

General Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated leadership in philanthropy, community service, business, government or the non-profit sector

  • A commitment to and understanding of YSB’s beneficiaries and the social services sector
  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a passion for improving the lives of others

Time Commitment: Approximately 2 hours per month for 2 years for Board responsibilities. Additional time will be required for other volunteer roles taken on during term of Board service.
